Academic Objectives

 

Based on whole-person education, we emphasize the acquisition of professional knowledge, teaching skills, and the formation of sound work ethics to cultivate professional personnel in foreign language teaching who, in consequence, will have a well-balanced personality, strong ethical values, and a positive and healthy attitude toward educating young people. Students will also acquire a solid academic foundation to enable them to pave the way for better foreign language teaching quality in Taiwan.

Curriculum Design & Teaching

 

Our courses largely focus on training students to teach foreign languages, and to design foreign language curriculum and multimedia materials. Features include enhanced competence in two foreign languages, expertise in language teaching in theory and practice, cultural and cross-cultural courses, internships in foreign language teaching, application of media and information technology to language teaching, literature for children and young adults, testing and evaluation of foreign language learning, and methodology of education research. The department curriculum design has the following features:

 

  1. Teaches with English only instruction
  2. Encourages language and professional certification
  3. Stresses language teaching theories and practice
  4. Offers educational research courses to equip students with research skills and knowledge
  5. Encourages in-campus or out-of-campus internship or practicum
  6. Gives students choices to enroll in the teacher education program or take other language courses to develop additional specialty
  7. Provides students with options to choose double majors, minor studies or education courses, and helps them be more competitive in future work place

Faculty

 

There are about 20 full-time faculty members; 90% of them are assistant professors, associate professors or professors with academic backgrounds of applied linguistics, TESOL, curriculum design and educational technology. Most faculty members are experienced teachers with years of teaching experiences or practical working experiences.

To enhance teachers and students practical knowledge, the department invites experienced professionals in related fields as guest speakers each semester to share their practical experiences or to teach collaboratively with the department faculty.

 

Career Prospects of Graduates

 

Graduates of the department can choose various careers or pursue higher degrees. They can teach English or work in related fields, such as foreign language teaching, foreign language curriculum design, books/teaching aid design, and research and development of high-tech educational tools. In addition, students who have completed the additional teacher education program can become qualified candidates for elementary school teaching positions after completing the internship and having passed the certification. Furthermore, those who would like to proceed with further education, either domestic or abroad, can continue with ease.
