Academic Objectives

 

    The Graduate Institute of Foreign Language Education and Cultural Industries aims at cultivating professionals excelling in teaching foreign languages at all levels of education, ranging from preschool to university, and in managing foreign language education and cultural industries, such as remedial teaching, publishing, mass communication and other language related businesses. The Institute seeks to help students achieve the following goals:

 

 

  1. To develop knowledge and abilities in theories and practices of foreign language teaching and management of language related businesses
  2. To cultivate research ability in areas related to foreign language instruction or management of language and cultural related businesses
  3. To foster abilities in creating and developing educational and digitalized materials or games
  4. To nurture abilities in foreign language curriculum design, software application and material evaluation
  5. To equip students with managerial skills and strategic planning in operating businesses related to foreign language education and cultural industries
  6. Curriculum Design & Teaching

 

    The curriculum focuses on two categories, namely, foreign language instruction and management of foreign language education and cultural industries, to cultivate talents in foreign language teaching, developing and creating teaching materials/games, and managements in foreign language education and cultural industries. Details of curriculum design and courses are as follows:

 

 

    1. A minimum of 38 credits, with 18 required courses and 20 elective courses, should be completed as part of the qualification for graduation, along with degree thesis evaluation.
    2. Subjects related to foreign language education include theories of foreign language teaching, foreign language course design, second language acquisition, foreign language learning strategies and styles, language learning materials/games design and production, evaluation and instructional assessment, E-learning and software application and evaluation, foreign language instruction and studies in linguistics, etc.
    3. Subjects related to management of foreign language education and cultural industries include ethical leadership and decision making, current issues, development strategies and quality assurance, et
  1. Faculty

 

  1. There are about 20 full time faculty members; 90% of them are assistant professors, associate professors or professors with academic backgrounds of applied linguistics, TESOL, curriculum design and educational technology. Most faculty members are experienced teachers with years of teaching experiences or practical working experiences.
  2. To enhance teachers’ and students’ practical knowledge, the department invites experienced professionals in related fields as guest speakers each semester to share their practical experiences or to teach collaboratively with the department faculty.
  3. Career Prospects of Graduates

 

  1. Graduates of this program can choose to work in related fields of formal and after-school language education, teaching English or other languages.
  2. There are now more than 5,000 primary and secondary schools and 5,000 private foreign language institutes throughout Taiwan, and the demand for high-quality foreign language teaching and management personnel is urgent.
  3. The training of language and management knowledge or skills makes graduates of this program more competitive in their current professional fields.
  4. Graduates of this program can choose to have further studies for doctoral degrees.

 

Research Directions

 

    This Institute aims at developing graduates’ ability to conduct research independently. The research direction focuses on following fields.

 

    1. Research related to the implementation of language learning strategies and learning styles in schools and educational industries, as well as their effectiveness.
    2. Research related to the evaluation of language learning materials, applications of software or on-line programs, and publications in the market.
    3. Empirical studies on designing learning games or teaching materials/ invention and their learning effectiveness.
    4. Research on the management and operation of language and cultural related business (e.g. organizational operation/ educational philosophy/ teacher training/ teaching/ learning materials used/ parental involvement and influences, etc.)
